Tiopa Ki Lakota ~ D. Jordan Redhawk

Published October 2005 ~ P.D. Publishing Inc.

What to say about this book? I’m crazy about this book. If you don’t like historical fiction then this is not the book for you. It is set in the 1700’s when America was still a new colony and Indians were the majority of the population. One of the main characters is a Lakota Indian woman, but she does not perform womanly tasks. She is a warrior and is resigned to living her life alone with a partner. The other main character is a white woman who is captured by Indians. The two women are eventually thrust together and thus begins their journey to love.

Redhawk give a lot of detail about the Lakota tribes and how they functioned at this time in our history. Her description of the Sun Dance was amazing and she helps you feel as if the main character has to participate in the ceremony. Of course, because she is a woman the chiefs of the tribes do not want her to. There is sex in this book, but it doesn’t happen to the very end. The saving grace is that you are so caught up in the characters, you are anticipating their joining right along with them. I believe this is one if not the best book Redhawk has written.
