Talk about slow burn. The premise of this story revolves around two women who knew each other early in their lives. One of them has harbored a crush on the other woman for over twenty years. In truth, she’s been in love with her for twenty years but didn’t think anything would ever come of it. They meet up again because the one woman inherits a Bed and Breakfast from her Aunt and decides to reopen. She needs a manager to run it since she’s a writer and wants to be able to write. Guess who shows up, the woman from her past.
I liked this story for two reasons, the characters have depth. Gardner took her time with them and each character in the book not just the two main characters, but the cursory characters help build the story. The antagonist is a crazy woman and Gardner does a good job of creating crazy. I don’t love the slow burn. I want a little love action from the characters way before the end of the story. A little bit of titillation goes a long way for me and I don’t mean gentle touches, stolen kisses and the like. I can see where there is reservation on Gardner’s part for the characters because they are older but little love action never hurt anybody.
