The Long Way Home ~ Rachel Spangler
Published September 2010 ~ Bold Strokes Books
Coming out is sometimes easy and sometimes its not. My sister outed me to my Mother and believe me it was not a pleasant experience. Fortunately, I had already moved away from home so I didn’t have deal with my family’s judgement up close. This is not the case in this book. One of the main characters comes out to her parents and needless to say, they are not supportive. The character moves away never to return to her hometown. She makes a name for herself telling her coming out story; however, you can only spin your coming out so many times.
The other character in the book has lived in their hometown all her life and even though she is a lesbian, she had not come out to a lot of her friends including most of the towns people. The main characters knew each other growing up but were not a couple. They noticed each other but that is as far as it went. Each of the characters helps the other step out of their comfort zone and be the person they want to be.
I liked this book. A little more sex would have been good, but overall a good read. Spangler does a good job of discussing the angst of coming out and the repercussions as a result of coming out. She also discusses the perceived repercussions that we sometimes create in our own minds because we don’t want to deal with reality. If you want to read this book, select the link The Long Way Home.
